Golden Star Thali offers the native cuisine from the Gujarati and Rajasthani regions and each delicacy is exquisitely flavored with the right spices. The kitchen is supervised by Hemji Maharaj, who boasts more than 30 years of culinary experience. The thali is unlimited and accompanied by a selection of salads, chutneys and pickles on the side. Different sweets are served on different days of the week. The four vegetable dishes available are made of cottage cheese, lentils, potatoes and greens, whilst the choice of farsans includes chat, steamed or fried. A variety of rice-based dishes and breads are on offer, such as bhakri and baajre ki roti. All this, and unlimited complimentary bottled mineral water, one can get for a reasonable 230 Rupees on weekdays and 260 Rupees on weekends.
The friendly staff consists of about 30 boys, who can be addressed as 'maharaj'. Each one dressed is in traditional Rajasthani attire, complete with a turban, to enhance the cultural and exotic atmosphere of the restaurant. There is not much that the waiters will not do for you, and it is a difficult task to say 'no' when they keep delivering more and more food to your table. In true thali style the portions are over-generous. Many frequenters to the restaurant would suggest a 24 hour fast before heading to Golden Star for a meal, to ensure there is enough space in the stomach to be able to try each and every dish. Another recommendation is to only sample the different dishes in small amounts, as the variety is so great.
The service is impeccably fast and the staffs' passion for food and their country is exuded onto the customers, making an experience at Golden Star Thali a unique one to remember. And for those who are too lazy to leave the house for such delight, the restaurant offers a home delivery service. Therefore, no one is deprived of Golden Star Thali.
The interior is cozy and charming with simple decoration. This allows for the focus at Golden Star to be on the scrumptious vegetarian food. The wooden chairs and tables create a relaxed and rustic atmosphere and have a seating capacity of 55 people. Reservations are definitely recommended as the small restaurant fills up quickly, particularly on weekends, with big families and large parties. For those tropical Indian summer nights, the venue is air conditioned. An upstairs room is also available for dining, and is particularly useful for private functions.
Golden Star celebrates a number of food festivals throughout the year. During January and February there is the Gujarat and Rajasthan Rasoi Utsav. Aamras, made on site from pure Alphonso mangoes is the main delicacy at this festival, and draws people from all over to come and relish in its sweet exotic flavor. Alphonso is the purest variety of mango in the world, golden yellow in color and smooth in texture. It is served complimentary on weekdays, and unlimited on Sundays, for those real Gujju thali lovers, and is sure to make you want to come back for more.
| In July there is the opportunity to sample and celebrate the creations of Chef Maharaj, one of the most experienced and well-known Gujarati and Rajasthani chefs in India. | Rajasthani food effortlessly blends heritage with rich flavors and good taste. Golden Star is a successful thali restaurant largely because it sticks to what it does best, and does it well, rather than attempting to be too adventurous.
